Writer's Guidelines

Submissions to the Yukhika Voices website:

YL: Wisconsin’s Indigenous People’s Voice in Arts and Culture is always looking to feature original works from Wisconsin’s American Indian writers on our website. We’re seeking critical reviews of fixed media and live events, fiction, opinion essays, memoirs, and poetry. We want pieces that heal, inspire, divide, and bring us together, but most of all we want work that captures what Wisconsin’s Native people are thinking about.

Genres needed and desired word count:
  • Critique of media, (500-800 words)
  • Live Event critique, (750-1000 words)
  • Fiction (600-1000 words),
  • Opinion essays (600-1000 words),
  • Memoirs (500-800 words)
  • Poetry (up to 30-60 lines, may submit multiple poems to reach line count)
  • Visual Art (submitted through high resolution jpeg)

Payment:
  • Critique of media, $50.00
  • Event critique, $75.00
  • Fiction, Opinion essays, Memoirs, Plays, and Poetry, ranging from $10.00-30.00
  • Visual Art, $10.00-30.00

Submission Format:
  • Microsoft Word or Google Docs
  • Use only 12 point, Times New Roman font, with no extra formatting
  • Images must be medium resolution JPEG sized to 300 pixels wide and 226 height for the website.
Submission Process for Writers Not Previously Published by YL:
  • Submit completed work electronically to Ryan Winn, editor, rwinn@menominee.edu
  • The editor will either accept or decline the piece.
  • If accepted, editor will send a “Writer’s Agreement” with payment proposal.
  • Writer will complete the “Writer’s Agreement” and W-9 and submit them.
  • Upon reception of the “Writer’s Agreement” and W-9, YL’s editor will complete the initial editorial edit and ask the author to make changes to the structure and composition of the work.
  • The writer will then make the edits and submit his/her final version and an accompanying image to the editor.
  • The editor will make final edits to the work and forward it and the image to the copy-editor.
  • The copy editor will make grammatical edits and forward the work and image to the web master for publication.
  • The webmaster will publish the work and image upon reception and the writer’s payment will be processed.
Submission Process for Writers Previously Published by YL:
  • Submit proposal to Ryan Winn, editor, rwinn@menominee.edu
  • The editor will either accept or decline the proposal.

  • The editor will make final edits to the work and forward it and the image to the copy-editor.

  • The web master will publish the work and image upon reception and the writer’s payment will be processed.
What the “Writer’s Agreement” grants to YL:
  • The right to publish the piece in the YL’s on-line journal, which is accessible free of charge to anyone with an internet connection.
  • The piece will be posted on our site for about five calendar years after the publication date.
  • The option to consider using the piece to promote YL in tribal newspapers throughout Wisconsin and in various promotional materials.
  • In the event that a piece is selected for these purposes, we will notify the writer as to what capacity it’s being used.
  • The option to consider using the piece in a forthcoming print edition of YL, which will assemble chosen pieces from numerous on-line journal editions.
  • In the event that a piece is selected for this purpose, we will notify the writer and provide him/her with a complimentary copy of the print edition.
